These works are interconnected by time and place, colour, shape, and the processes of making and growing; made over the last year in response to the gallery space and an ongoing engagement with materials and process.

The fabrics are coloured with plants either grown in Deborah’s garden; weld, viburnum, st john’s wort, madder and woad, or foraged from The Downs. Some of these fragile colours will eventually fade to dustier versions, others are more stubborn. Materials are selected, dyed, painted, cut, arranged, rearranged, pinned, stitched, pasted, until relationships emerge through careful or chance placement. Some works are made quickly, with compositional objects appearing to float in space, perhaps capturing a specific moment, while other works slowly evolve, held and stitched into place.

Last year as time slowed down, Deborah found comfort in simple living. As winter came and the mood became murky the iridescent yellow silks, soft madder pink linens and deep blue indigos stacked up on her studio shelves from the previous growing and dyeing season, reminded Deborah that everything comes around full circle.

Deborah studied Visual Communication at Central St Martins and Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art. She exhibits her work in museums and galleries, most recently exhibiting a series of quilts at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft.
